A Civil Rights Unit That No Longer Prioritizes Civil Rights

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division was built for one core job: making sure Americans don't get blocked from voting because of their race, their disability, or the language they speak. It has sent election monitors to polling sites for decades. That is what the unit does. That is what it has always done.
Now it does something else. According to NBC News, the Trump administration has redirected the division's focus toward voter fraud, a problem that election experts have repeatedly documented as vanishingly rare but that Republicans have been using as a political weapon since long before 2020.
Dhillon emailed Civil Rights Division employees asking them to volunteer as monitors, with a target of 1,000 people in the field for the midterms, a person familiar with the matter told NBC News. For context, the division has solicited staff lawyers to monitor elections before. It has never come close to 1,000. And fraud has never been the explicit agenda.
Who's Running This, Exactly
Harmeet Dhillon is not a neutral bureaucrat who stumbled into this job. She co-chaired Lawyers for Trump during the 2020 election, the sprawling legal effort that filed dozens of lawsuits trying to overturn results in states Biden won. She believes, or at minimum has professionally benefited from claiming to believe, that Donald Trump won an election he lost by over seven million votes.
She now runs the division tasked with impartially overseeing civil rights enforcement at American elections. You cannot make this up.
NBC News also reports that many career employees in the division have been replaced by conservative hires, some of whom actively support Trump's false claim that he won in 2020. So the people going into polling sites as federal monitors, theoretically acting as neutral observers, include people who think the last election was stolen.
What the Veterans Are Worried About
NBC News spoke with a half-dozen Justice Department veterans about what this looks like from the inside, and the picture they paint is not reassuring. The core fear isn't that these monitors will find rampant fraud, because they won't, because it isn't there at any meaningful scale. The fear is what comes after.
If Trump is unhappy with midterm results, a fleet of federally credentialed monitors deployed to hunt for problems, staffed by people who already believe elections are rigged when Republicans lose, becomes a very useful tool for manufacturing doubt. That's the concern. Not that they'll stop real fraud. That they'll be used to perform the theater of fraud-hunting in ways that conveniently serve the interests of one specific man.
This is the playbook. It has been the playbook. The only difference now is they have the Justice Department to run it with.

According to a spokesperson for the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office, Patrick Havas, 38, pushed through the crowd while Acton was speaking, security confronted him, and two people were knocked to the ground.

According to NBC News, Acton, who is a physician, was not injured. She stayed on site afterward to attend to one of the people who had been hurt. A Boeing 767-300 operating as an Amazon-branded cargo plane crashed just outside Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people and injuring five others, officials said. The plane overran the runway while landing, struck multiple vehicles, and came to rest in a nearby field. The FAA said the aircraft had taken off from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Three of the five injured were in critical condition, according to the Miami-Dade fire chief. A hotline has been established for relatives of those who may have been involved, NBC News reports.

You are supposed to believe that sending 1,000 fraud-hunting monitors, hired under an administration that has replaced career civil servants with people who think the 2020 election was stolen, into polling sites across America is just good-faith election integrity work. That the woman who ran legal operations for Trump's effort to throw out millions of legitimate votes is now the right person to neutrally oversee civil rights at the ballot box. That none of this is connected to the fact that midterm elections often go badly for the president's party, and that Trump has a well-documented habit of declaring fraud whenever he loses something.
The Civil Rights Division was not a perfect institution. No government body is. But it existed to protect the people who have historically had the hardest time voting in this country. What it is being turned into is a political instrument designed to produce a narrative, not protect a right. The monitors aren't going out to find the thousands of fraudulent votes that decide elections, because those votes don't exist. They're going out so that if November goes badly, someone can stand at a podium and say they saw things.
That is the game. It is not subtle. And the fact that we are watching the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division get hollowed out and repurposed for it, in plain sight, during a midterm cycle, while an armed man shows up to a gubernatorial candidate's campaign event with two guns and brass knuckles, should tell you everything you need to know about where we are.
