Routine water testing at a Meta AI datacenter construction site in Cheyenne, Wyoming turned up something nobody expected: a rare, potentially hazardous bacterium in 801,000 gallons of wastewater that had already been flushed into the city sewer. That's the opening act. The rest of the story involves boiling trout streams, forever chemicals, flooded houses, and an industry that would very much prefer you look somewhere else.
What Cheyenne Found in Meta's Water
Earlier this year, wastewater discharged by Goat Systems, a contractor working on Meta's $800 million, 960-acre AI campus in Cheyenne, tested positive for Cupriavidus gilardii, a rare bacterium that can cause infections in immunocompromised people. The water wasn't headed for the drinking supply, but it was used for irrigation, which means residents could theoretically inhale evaporating droplets. That's not a theoretical risk local officials were willing to wave off.
As The Guardian reports, the city's board of public utilities didn't pull the plug on accepting wastewater from Meta's contractor until July, months after the initial discovery. Frank Strong, the city's water resources manager, put it plainly: "It was a big surprise. Out of a sense of caution we've shut it down until we can find out more information." Goat Systems is now appealing that decision.
Meta, for its part, says independent testing by its contractor found zero evidence of the bacterium and questioned whether the city's tests were even valid. The company issued a statement about being "a good neighbor in Cheyenne" and protecting local water resources. You know, while appealing the decision to stop dumping the water that had bacteria in it.
This Is Not an Isolated Incident
Cheyenne is one data point in what is becoming an unmistakable pattern. The Guardian has documented enforcement actions against multiple datacenters in Virginia for wastewater and wetland permit violations. In West Virginia, stormwater runoff from an unfinished datacenter has flooded surrounding homes not once but twice. In Georgia, Flint Riverkeeper says it will sue the QTS datacenter in Fayetteville for allegedly dumping "massive amounts of dirt" and "massive concentrations of metals" into the Flint River over two years.
The Waterkeeper Alliance, a network of environmental organizations, reports that 55 of its affiliated groups across the US are currently working on datacenter-related issues. Eighty percent of those campaigns center specifically on pollutants leaching into the environment through discharged water. That is not a fringe concern. That is a coordinated, nationwide alarm being raised by people who spend their professional lives watching what goes into America's waterways.
"Datacenters have been documented as sources of a wide range of toxic pollutants, including PFAS, heavy metals and antibiotic-resistant bacteria," a Waterkeeper Alliance spokeswoman told The Guardian. That sentence should probably be in more headlines than it currently is.
The Forever Chemicals Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About
Here is where it gets worse. The water that datacenters use for cooling can come back out loaded with PFAS, the so-called "forever chemicals" linked to cancer, thyroid disease, immune dysfunction, and a list of other health outcomes that reads like a pharmaceutical ad's side-effect reel. These chemicals don't break down. They accumulate. And according to The Guardian's reporting, they can be found even in the "closed loop" cooling systems the datacenter industry promotes as the environmentally responsible option.
A mid-sized datacenter consumes around 300,000 gallons of water per day. When that water is released, it goes out under pretreatment permits issued by counties and local utilities, documents that are not always easy for the public to access or scrutinize. An environmental group has sued the city of Racine, Wisconsin, just to force disclosure of details about water use at a $3.3 billion Microsoft datacenter. The city of The Dalles in Oregon, according to The Guardian, sued its own local news outlet at one point. The industry's relationship with transparency is, to put it gently, complicated.
Cooking the Trout in New York
In New York, residents near Lake Seneca are fighting a gas-fired facility that is converting from crypto mining to AI and plans to discharge water at temperatures up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit into the lake. For context, trout begin experiencing physiological stress at 70 degrees. The facility's opponents aren't being dramatic when they call this a crisis.
"It's going into a trout stream, where trout are stressed at temperatures of 70F or higher, and that hot water is also a contributing factor to harmful algal blooms, which is a toxin to both humans and animals," Yvonne Taylor, vice-president of Seneca Lake Guardian, told The Guardian. She went further: algal blooms can contaminate tap water so severely that residents can't shower, can't flush, can't give their pets water from the tap.
Vulcan Infrastructure and Power, the company behind the Lake Seneca facility, has said it has complied with all relevant environmental laws. New York has since issued a temporary moratorium on large hyperscale datacenters, and Taylor is pushing for a national pause. Her description of the industry's expansion: "These facilities are spreading across the country like a cancer."
The Industry's Favorite Defense Is Getting Old
The datacenter industry's go-to response to water concerns is to point out that agriculture uses far more water. This is true, and it is also a profoundly low bar that gets lower every time a contractor pumps bacteria-laden wastewater into a city sewer or a river catches a thermal plume. You do not get credit for not being the worst water user in human history.
The AI buildout is accelerating at a pace that local governments, environmental regulators, and water utilities are genuinely struggling to keep up with. Permits written for industrial facilities in quieter times are now being applied to AI campuses the size of small towns. The regulatory framework hasn't caught up, and the companies benefiting from that gap are not exactly rushing to close it.

You are supposed to believe that AI is the most transformational technology since the internet, and maybe it is. But the people selling that transformation would prefer you not ask too many questions about what is going into the water table in Wyoming, or what is coming out of the pipes at 108 degrees in upstate New York. The story The Guardian has assembled here isn't a story about one bad actor. It's a story about an entire industry that is scaling so fast that the environmental consequences are being discovered in real time, by local officials doing routine tests, by environmental lawyers filing FOIA requests, by neighbors watching their basements flood.
Meta disputes the bacteria findings. The QTS datacenter in Georgia disputes the pollution claims. Vulcan says it's complying with the law. Every company in every one of these cases has a statement ready about being a responsible partner in the community. What none of them have is a coherent answer for why, in city after city after city, the water near their facilities keeps turning up wrong.
The AI boom is real. The investment is real. The economic pressure on local governments to approve these projects and ask questions later is very real. What is also real is 801,000 gallons of bacteria-laced water in a Wyoming sewer, PFAS building up in cooling systems that were supposed to be the clean option, and trout getting cooked alive in a New York lake while a company files its compliance paperwork. At some point, "we followed the permit" stops being a defense and starts being an indictment of the permit.
