Kamala Explained Algorithms With Flowers and Fox Lost Its Mind

Harris appeared on "Off Air with Big Boy" this week, where host Big Boy asked her about AI, TikTok, Instagram, and the role personalized algorithms might play in shaping how Americans consume information ahead of the midterms. It was a reasonable question. She gave a reasonable answer.

"If you keep seeing the same thing over and over again, know that you are being targeted," Harris said, according to Fox News. "Because you looked at it the first time, they're just going to keep sending it to you, which means they're trying to dumb people down with the assumption that people don't have any interest beyond what they've already seen."

Then she used an analogy. A simple, accessible analogy designed to explain a technical concept to a general audience. "The algorithm's suggesting I have no more interest — because I'm looking at this yellow flower, I'm only interested in yellow flowers, as though my brain can't handle the fact that there may be a pink flower that I might be interested in looking at."

This is... a correct description of how recommendation algorithms work. Filter bubbles are a documented phenomenon studied extensively by researchers at institutions like MIT and Stanford. The flower thing was just a way to say that without making people's eyes glaze over.

Fox News Saw Differently

Sean Hannity watched this clip and had a crisis. "What was that?" he demanded on air, apparently having never encountered the concept of a simple analogy before. His guest, Fox host Jimmy Failla, went further, joking that Harris thinks "AI is Allen Iverson from the Philadelphia 76ers."

Let that response sink in. A woman accurately described algorithmic reinforcement loops, and the counter-argument was an Allen Iverson joke. This is the network that spent two years telling you it was a serious journalistic institution.

Fox News has run this playbook before. Harris explaining that AI stands for artificial intelligence and involves machine learning got treated as a gaffe back in 2023. She said, "AI is kind of a fancy thing. First of all, it's two letters. It means artificial intelligence, but ultimately what it is is it's about machine learning." Which is, again, true. Incomplete for a PhD seminar, sure. Perfectly calibrated for a public-facing explanation, yes.

The Irony Is Almost Too Much

Here is where it gets genuinely funny. Harris was on this podcast specifically to talk about how algorithms manipulate people by feeding them the same content repeatedly, reinforcing existing beliefs and limiting exposure to new information. She warned that this is how people get "dumbed down."

And then Fox News clipped it, mocked it without engaging the substance at all, and fed it to an audience that has been algorithmically sorted to distrust everything Kamala Harris says regardless of content. The thing she was warning about happened in real time as the warning was being issued.

It would be impressive if it weren't so depressing.

Where Harris Actually Is Right Now

Harris has been active on the midterm campaign trail, and Fox notes she has left the door open for a 2028 presidential run without committing to anything. Earlier this month, according to Fox News, she called on President Trump to pursue an international agreement, including with China, aimed at limiting dangerous uses of AI and establishing global testing standards.

That is a substantive policy position. It got approximately zero coverage compared to the flower thing, which tells you everything about the current state of political media.

Harris served as a leading voice in the Biden administration's work on artificial intelligence. You can agree or disagree with the policy directions that work took. But the idea that she doesn't understand how algorithms function is not supported by the clip Fox News is currently mocking. It is supported only by the decision to mock the clip rather than listen to it.
