Someone hit a car carrying an 80-year-old congresswoman on her way to church, then got picked up by another vehicle and drove away. Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, the longest-serving woman in the history of the House of Representatives, was hospitalized Sunday morning after her vehicle was struck in Toledo in what police are calling a hit-and-run. She is expected to recover. The driver who hit her is still out there.
What Actually Happened on Detroit Avenue
According to CBS News, Toledo police responded to the intersection of Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue just before 11 a.m. local time Sunday for what they described as a "hit-skip crash." Two people were transported to the hospital, including Kaptur, both with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Kaptur's office confirmed to CBS News that she was a passenger, not the driver, and that she was en route to a church service when her vehicle was struck. A witness told CBS affiliate WTOL 11 that the other driver did not stick around to exchange insurance information or check on anyone they had just put in the hospital. Instead, they got into a second vehicle and left.
Toledo Police Accident Investigators responded to the scene. As of Sunday, the investigation was described as active and ongoing, with authorities not releasing additional details.
The Congresswoman's Condition
Fox News reports that Kaptur's office released a statement describing her as "active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries." Her office added that she "looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon" and expressed gratitude for the outreach from constituents.
So she's going to be okay. That part is genuinely good news, and it's worth saying plainly before getting into everything else around this story. Kaptur is 80 years old and was just in a car accident caused by someone who then ran. The fact that she was alert and communicating Sunday is the best possible outcome of a genuinely frightening situation.
Who Marcy Kaptur Is, If You Somehow Don't Know
CBS News notes that Kaptur has held her seat in Ohio's 9th Congressional District since 1983. Forty-three years. She is the longest-serving woman in the House of Representatives and in Congress overall. She has been casting votes in that building since Ronald Reagan's first term, through eight presidents, through wars, financial crises, and a pandemic.
She is not some peripheral figure. She's a Democrat in a district that has gotten harder and harder to hold as northwest Ohio shifted rightward over the past decade, and she has held it anyway through sheer force of constituent service and institutional longevity. Love her politics or not, the woman has put in the time.
She was on her way to church when someone hit her car and drove away. That is the situation.
The Driver Is Still Missing
This is the part that should be getting more attention. Per CBS News, a witness saw the driver of the other vehicle get into a second car and flee the scene after the crash. That means this was not a panicked, split-second bad decision by someone who didn't realize the severity of what happened. A second vehicle was there. Someone was waiting, or at minimum available, to pick that driver up.
Toledo police have not identified the driver or released any further details about the fleeing vehicle. The investigation is ongoing. Whether this was random bad luck or something else entirely is a question authorities will need to answer, and they have not answered it yet.

Is it possible this was completely random, a reckless driver who panicked and had a friend nearby by coincidence? Sure. That happens. People make catastrophically stupid decisions in the immediate aftermath of crashes, and sometimes another car is just nearby. The Toledo Police investigation may turn up something mundane and stupid rather than something calculated. We genuinely do not know yet, and it would be irresponsible to speculate beyond what the reporting shows.
What we do know is that Kaptur is going to be fine, that someone is still out there who left the scene after putting two people in the hospital, and that Toledo police need to find them. The rest can wait for the investigation. Get well soon, Congresswoman. Forty-three years in that building and you've earned the right to make it to church without incident.
