Nine Million Death Certificates Walk Into a Study
Researchers examined death certificates from January 2020 through December 2022, covering nearly 9 million Americans, according to reporting by Good Good Good. After adjusting for age, sex, race, ethnicity, and education, about 1 in 100 taxi and ambulance drivers died of Alzheimer's disease. The general population clocked in at roughly 1 in 60. Workers locked into fixed, predetermined routes got no protective benefit whatsoever. The key ingredient was continuous real-time navigation. The Hippocampus Is Either Getting a Workout or Getting Eaten Alive
Here is the anatomy of why this matters. The hippocampus governs both memory and spatial navigation. It is also one of the first regions Alzheimer's destroys. Problems with orientation and spatial navigation are among the earliest warning signs of the disease, sometimes showing up before the memory loss that most people associate with Alzheimer's. A follow-up study linked that environmental complexity to greater volume in the brain's spatial navigation regions.
So What Are You Supposed to Do With This?
The practical implication is not subtle. Every time you open a turn-by-turn navigation app and let it think for you, you are outsourcing the exact cognitive work that appears to protect your brain against one of the most devastating diseases of aging. You are paying for the convenience now and potentially paying for it again later in a much worse currency.
This does not mean throwing your phone into a river. It means occasionally, deliberately, choosing to figure out where you are. Read an actual map before you leave the house. Walk somewhere unfamiliar and build the route in your head. Take a different way home. These are small, low-stakes exercises that engage the same hippocampal circuitry that taxi drivers build through thousands of hours on the job. The research, as Good Good Good reports, points consistently toward one conclusion: routinely exercising the cognitive systems involved in spatial navigation may help delay the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms.
