Fifty-seven light-years from Earth, there is a bubblegum-pink planet where it rains salt. Scientists just confirmed this using the James Webb Space Telescope, and apparently the most surprising part isn't the salt clouds themselves but the fact that anyone was able to find them at all.
So There's a Pink Planet, First of All
Let's back up. GJ504b, nicknamed the Pink Planet, was first discovered in 2013 and is already a bit of an odd duck. As CBS News reports, it isn't technically a planet in the strict sense. It's what scientists call a 'planetary-mass companion,' meaning it could be a giant exoplanet or a small brown dwarf orbiting a sun-like star. The taxonomic ambiguity is the least weird thing about it.
It sits in orbit around a star similar to our own sun, it's estimated to be roughly 25 times the mass of Jupiter, and it's somewhere between 2.5 billion and 4 billion years old. It's also pink. That last detail doesn't get less funny the more you read about it.
The color comes from its temperature. At around 550 degrees Fahrenheit, the Pink Planet is blazing hot by any human standard but shockingly cold for a gas giant of its size. For context, most exoplanets run between 1,000 and 2,000 degrees. GJ504b is the lukewarm leftovers of the giant planet world, and it gets cooler as it ages.
The Salt Cloud Discovery Nobody Saw Coming
A research team led by Northwestern University used the James Webb Space Telescope to peer into GJ504b's atmosphere and came back with something nobody expected: clouds made of salt. The findings were published Thursday in The Astronomical Journal.
'We were very surprised, because people have theorized that salt clouds might exist in the atmospheres of companions at these temperatures of, say, 500 to 700 degrees Fahrenheit, but people in general just don't observe any kind of signatures of clouds in such temperatures,' study leader Aneesh Baburaj told CBS News. Baburaj is a postdoctoral associate at Northwestern's Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics, which is a real place where apparently very cool things happen.
Here's the atmospheric logic, which is genuinely interesting. On Earth, clouds are made of water. On Jupiter, ammonia. On extremely hot worlds, you get silicate clouds, which sounds like something out of a horror movie. Salt clouds, it turns out, fill the gap in between: too hot for water or ammonia, too cool for silicates. GJ504b sits right in that temperature sweet spot, and the Webb telescope caught it.
Two Hours vs. Close to Impossible
Here is where the James Webb telescope earns its $10 billion price tag. GJ504b's low temperature has made it a nightmare to study from Earth. Multiple research teams around the world have tried and failed to properly observe its light. The planet essentially refused to be seen.
Then Webb showed up. According to CBS News, the entire successful observation took two hours. Two. The same amount of time it takes to watch a mediocre superhero movie. 'We were really, really amazed by how easy it was to detect with James Webb, as opposed to like it had been close to impossible from the ground,' Baburaj said.
The telescope captures infrared images and spectra, spreading light out to reveal chemical fingerprints invisible to the human eye. When researchers analyzed the Pink Planet's light signature, they found water vapor, methane, carbon dioxide, and ammonia in the atmosphere. But none of the models made sense until they added salt clouds to the equation. The salt wasn't a hypothesis. It was the only explanation that fit.
What This Actually Means Going Forward
Salt clouds on a distant pink planet are a great headline, but the real story here is what it says about what the Webb telescope can do next. Baburaj told CBS News that because Webb is so much more powerful than its predecessors, it opens the door to studying increasingly cold objects in space, things that were simply undetectable before.
'We will be able to detect colder and colder objects, and a lot of these objects might have these higher metal-to-hydrogen ratios compared to our sun,' he said. That matters because cold planetary bodies are harder to see and have been systematically underrepresented in our understanding of what's out there. Every time Webb finds something in a temperature range we wrote off as unobservable, it rewrites what we think we know.
The discovery also validates a decade of theoretical work. Astronomers had predicted salt clouds could exist in this temperature range but had no observational evidence to back it up. Now they do. Science works on confirmation, and this is a big one.

Two hours. It found salt clouds that multiple ground-based telescopes couldn't find in years of trying. That's what sustained public investment in science looks like when it actually works.
GJ504b is not going to solve any of our problems down here. But the fact that we can point a telescope at a pink planet almost six decades of light-travel away and read its atmospheric chemistry like a grocery receipt is one of the genuinely remarkable things our species has managed to pull off. File that wherever you keep the things that make existence feel slightly less bleak.
