On Wednesday, August 12, people in Spain will witness the first total solar eclipse visible from the country's mainland in 121 years. Americans in Washington, D.C. will get to watch four percent of the sun disappear. As NPR reports, the universe has once again distributed its gifts with characteristic indifference to national pride.
Who Sees What, and From Where
According to NPR, people in Iceland, Greenland, northern Russia, Spain, and part of Portugal will experience a total solar eclipse, the kind where the moon slides perfectly in front of the sun and turns the middle of the day into something genuinely eerie. León, Spain hits totality at 8:28 p.m. local time, and it lasts two minutes. Reykjavík, Iceland gets its moment at 5:48 p.m. local time.
The rest of us get a partial eclipse. NASA says northern parts of the United States, stretching from Alaska down to North Carolina, will see the moon take a bite out of the sun. In Washington, D.C., that bite amounts to four percent, beginning around 1:17 p.m. ET. Four percent. You could miss it by blinking at the wrong moment.
To be clear, a partial eclipse is still worth looking at. The sun takes on a crescent shape as the moon slides across without fully covering it. It is objectively cool. It is just considerably less cool than watching the sky go dark in the middle of the afternoon while birds panic and the air temperature drops, which is what Spain gets.
Spain's 121-Year Wait Is Finally Over
The European Space Agency points out that this is the first solar eclipse visible from Spain's mainland since 1905. Let that sink in for a second. The last time Spaniards watched a total solar eclipse from their own soil, Theodore Roosevelt was president of the United States, powered flight was two years old, and Einstein had just published the special theory of relativity.
Every person alive in Spain right now has waited their entire life for this. And on Wednesday evening, for exactly two minutes over León, they will get it. No wonder eclipse tourism to the region has been building for months. This is not a drill.
Do Not, Under Any Circumstances, Just Look at It
Here is the part where we have to talk about eyes, because apparently this warning needs repeating every single eclipse cycle. NPR reports that special eclipse glasses or handheld viewers with appropriate filters are required to watch either the total or partial eclipse safely. Your regular sunglasses will not cut it. Not your polarized ones. Not your very expensive ones. None of them.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology is unambiguous on this: looking at the sun, even briefly, can cause burns and permanent vision loss. During the partial phases of a total eclipse, the same rules apply. The only time it is safe to remove eclipse glasses is during the brief window of totality itself, and only if you are actually in the path of totality. If you are in Washington watching four percent of the sun disappear, keep the glasses on the entire time.
Eclipse glasses are cheap, widely available, and take about thirty seconds to acquire online or at a local science museum. The alternative is potentially damaging your retinas permanently. This is not a hard call.
NASA Is Sending Balloons and a Jet Into the Sky Because of Course They Are
Scientists are not wasting this opportunity. NASA tells NPR it will have teams deploying scientific balloons and a high-altitude jet to study how a sudden brief darkening of the sky affects Earth's atmosphere. The data gathered during the minutes of totality can reveal things about the sun's corona that are essentially impossible to study any other way.
"From our unique perspective on Earth during a total solar eclipse, scientists can study the Sun's corona in a way we can't from anywhere else in the solar system," Kelly Korreck, NASA's eclipse program manager, said in a statement. The corona is the sun's outer atmosphere, normally invisible because the sun itself is too blindingly bright. During totality, with the sun's face blocked, it blazes into view as a white halo. Stunning to look at. Scientifically invaluable.
This is one of those moments where the intersection of basic physics and planetary geometry produces something that feels almost designed. The moon is 400 times smaller than the sun and approximately 400 times closer to Earth, which means from our vantage point they appear almost exactly the same size. That coincidence, which is purely accidental, is why total solar eclipses exist at all.
When Is the Next One?
If you are reading this from somewhere that only gets four percent coverage on Wednesday and you are feeling cheated, NPR has some scheduling information for you. The next partial solar eclipse visible across parts of the U.S. is coming on August 2, 2027, with totality again visible from Spain, the Middle East, and parts of North Africa.
If you want totality over the contiguous United States, you are going to need some patience. That does not happen again until August 23, 2044. Mark your calendar. Tell your kids. And maybe start planning a trip to Spain for Wednesday if you have not already, because the next chance to see this from their mainland is another 121 years away, and none of us are going to be around for that one.

The sun has been doing this for four and a half billion years. The moon has been drifting in front of it for just as long. They will still be doing it long after every single thing we are currently arguing about has turned to dust.
Get the glasses. Go outside at 1:17 p.m. ET. Look up. It is four percent of an eclipse, which sounds pathetic but is still a moon crossing in front of a star ninety-three million miles away. That is not nothing. That is, in fact, genuinely astonishing, and we could all probably stand to remember that right now.
